SOMA Hotel/Caprice Restaurant
SOMA/CAPRICE BAR & GRILL
We (a group containing me and other designers, both graphic and interior) were tasked with a remodel of the historic Capital Hotel in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas. In doing this, our sole intention was to bring a more modern look to the hotel/restaurant.
The word SOMA is a derivative from the puzzle cube of the same name. This came from the idea of “What if a hotel were a puzzle?”...of sorts. In the end we planned for the hotel rooms to fit together much like Tetris pieces, being that they fit together in an organized manner but they were erratic in proportion.
Caprice as a name came from it’s root in the the French word for “Whim” and the Italian word for “sudden change”. In chosing this we felt that we paired the subtle change of environment and the change of name from SOMA in a seamless way.
In pairing we chose to bring a unified feel through use of very similar color palettes but decided to differentiate the spaces by the use of distinct but complimentary materials. In SOMA we used a modular/industrial metal feel, while in Caprice we used distressed brick and reclaimed woods.
